NC LATIN CLUB
Mexico / North America
Mexico connects deserts, mountains, Pacific and Caribbean shores with a vast range of communities. Regional kitchens, Indigenous languages, mariachi and celebrations of memory offer different ways into its cultural life.
Explore the culture
Northern deserts, central highlands, southern mountains and the Yucatán Peninsula create contrasting settings. Spanish is widely spoken alongside many Indigenous languages; each region carries histories that reach beyond the familiar images of the capital.
Maize, beans and chili form a foundation of traditional cooking. UNESCO’s Michoacán paradigm describes a whole food culture, from cultivation to shared meals, including nixtamalization: processing maize with an alkaline solution to prepare it for foods such as tortillas.
Mariachi brings together song and stringed instruments; modern ensembles often include trumpets, violins, vihuela and guitarrón. Its repertoire includes regional songs, serenades and dance forms, carrying knowledge through listening, learning and performance.
In Indigenous communities, Día de Muertos commemorates the temporary return of deceased relatives around late October and early November. Flowers, candles, favourite foods and offerings connect families with loved ones and with particular community traditions.
