Colombia / South America
Colombia’s story travels between the Caribbean, Pacific, Andes, Llanos and Amazon. Carnival, marimba, vallenato and regional cooking reveal different communities, while today’s artists carry Colombian sounds into new collaborations.
Explore the culture
Andean mountain ranges, two ocean coasts, eastern plains, Amazonian forests and island territories form Colombia’s geographic mosaic. Spanish shares the country with Indigenous languages, Creoles and Colombian Sign Language; the San Andrés archipelago also has an English-speaking history.
Arepas are maize-based cakes with many preparations. Bandeja paisa, ajiaco and sancocho offer other paths into regional kitchens, alongside rice, cassava, potatoes, fish and tropical fruits. Ingredients and accompaniments change with place and household.
In the Greater Magdalena region, traditional vallenato tells stories through accordion, a small drum and guacharaca. Parrandas bring families and friends together. UNESCO placed this tradition on its Urgent Safeguarding List in 2015, highlighting the need to sustain its transmission.
Afro-descendant communities in Colombia’s South Pacific and Ecuador’s Esmeraldas share marimba music, chants and dances. Singing and percussion accompany ritual, religious and festive occasions, with elders passing on stories and knowledge within families and communities.
During the four days before Lent, Barranquilla’s carnival fills the city with dances, music, masks and costumes. Caribbean trading histories brought Indigenous, African and European expressions into contact; cumbia, puya and porro are among its varied musical forms.
